Derek is an advocate for wider mental health awareness and discussion, and is working towards creating better mental health resources within the arts, and beyond.
Derek became a Samaritan at the age of 19 and continued with the organisation for five years, becoming Deputy Director of his local branch. He then studied counselling and has continued to work with emotional-support organisations since. Currently he is working with Connect Death Row.
Through his own experiences traversing mental health issues, he has explored many kinds of health practice, both scientific and pseudo-scientific. His work with somatic-based meditation has ultimately raised questions about the role of psychosomatics in both the formation of illness and the healing process.
